Installing Windows with Aluminum Siding

Adding new windows to any home will make it look much better and also increase is value, installing windows in aluminum siding however an be a scary prospect for any homeowner. Fortunately installing windows in aluminum siding isn't actually any more difficult than in any other type of house.

You will find it very easy to install windows in aluminum siding as long as you have enough time to complete the project successfully.

Step 1 - Marking the Window

The first thing that you will need to do is mark the position of the window on both the inside and outside of your house. Once you have marked up these with pens you will then be able to use masking tape to protect the wall and siding.

Step 2 - Removing the Siding Panels

The siding panels then need to be removed from the wall using a siding unlock tool. Remove the siding panels and carefully set them aside, using masking tape protect the location which you are cutting the window with.

Step 3 - Cutting the Opening

Start by cutting the opening from the interior wall using the circular saw. You may need to repeat this several times so that you can make a smooth cut. Once you have finished cutting the interior of the wall you will then need to go outside and repeat the same thing outside. Remove all of the off cuts of material and clean out the opening so that a window can be fitted easily.

Step 4 - Making a Frame

Now a frame needs to be made out of lumber, this is a rough frame which needs to be nailed together according to the specifications of the manufacturer. This should be put into the opening and then you need to use a spirit level to check that it's level. If it's not level then you will need to use ships to level it. Secure the rough frame by nailing it into the walls.

Step 5 - Window Flashing

Now place the window flashing onto all of the sides of the opening and fix this using nails. Now you are ready to position the window into the opening, use your spirit level again and use more wood shims to check that everything is level. Nail the window frame to the wooden frame to secure it.

Step 6 - Insulation

The window frame then needs to be insulated by using spray foam which can be sprayed into all of the holes. Fiberglass insulation can also be used on any larger patches.

Step 7 - Cutting Siding


Now all that's left to do is cut all of the pieces of siding using a circular saw. Ensure that these are cut in the right place for the best results. Now you just need to fill any gaps using caulking and you're finished.
